Mall Call - Yu Su

YU SU
Yu Su didn’t exactly take the conventional route into club music. Born in Kaifeng, China, and classically trained before moving to Vancouver, she arrived at electronic music with the instincts of an instrumentalist rather than a producer raised exclusively on dancefloors. Perhaps that helps explain why her music has always been so difficult to pin down. Early downtempo and hazy house gradually opened into the dub-inflected world of her debut album "Yellow River Blue", before 2023’s EP "I Want An Earth" ventured further into krautrock, ambient, jazz and leftfield electronics. Wherever Yu Su goes, genres become raw material rather than destinations. On this year’s "Foundry", that restless musical language has become harder, stranger and more physical. The same refusal to stay in one place also defines Yu Su behind the decks, where ambient and dub can give way to house, electro and driving techno. At Mall Call, that sense of exploration should feel very much at home.
