“Goddess of Rhythm” is quite a title to live up to, but Karen Nyame KG has spent much of her career doing exactly that. A producer long before she became a DJ, the London artist first emerged during the original UK funky explosion, developing a fiercely percussive sound where African polyrhythms, heavy low-end and soulful melodies reflect both her Ghanaian heritage and the restless hybridity of the city she calls home. Over the years, that rhythmic language has made KG an influential presence in contemporary dance music, taking her from underground UK club culture to Panorama Bar, Primavera Sound and a celebrated Boiler Room set, while collaborations and remixes have connected her to artists including Kelela and PinkPantheress. Her latest EP “Epiphany” pushes the formula somewhere deeper and more sensual, retaining the swing of her UK funky roots while diving into hypnotic grooves and deep house. Behind the decks, KG describes her approach as seducing a crowd into a groove, moving through peaks, dives and tension until reaching euphoria. Inside Mall Call’s abandoned storefronts, the Goddess of Rhythm should have plenty to work with.
