Dance music is built around movement, but DJ Seinfeld has spent much of his life wondering what happens if you stop. For years, the Swedish producer born Armand Jakobsson has carried a certain restlessness with him. From childhood homesickness to a touring schedule that has taken him from intimate clubs to Glastonbury and Coachella. That tension has always existed somewhere inside his music. Emerging from the lo-fi house wave with the raw, melancholic "Time Spent Away From U" (2017), Seinfeld gradually expanded his palette through house, 2-step, breaks, ambient and pop without losing his remarkable ability to make dance music feel deeply personal. On his third album, "If This Is It", however, the urge to keep moving finally gives way to something resembling acceptance. Written slowly over several years, the record moves between hazy introspection, garage rhythms, trance euphoria and shimmering synth-pop, transforming questions about nostalgia, anxiety and belonging into some of his warmest and most emotionally direct music yet. Behind the decks, that emotional range becomes something altogether more physical, as house, garage, breaks and euphoric electronics move between moments of reflection and pure release.
